The Managing Partner, Olaniwun Ajayi LP, Professor Konyinsola Ajayi,
SAN, has urged Nigerians not to allow nepotism, ethnicity and
sectionalism influence their voting decision in elections.
Speaking as the guest speaker at the 11th Founder’s Day Lecture and
Award Ceremony with the theme: “Politics beyond Ethnicity, Nepotism and
Sectionalism: A Duty for the Nigerian Press and the Electorate”,
organized by The Bible Society of Nigeria, Professor Ajayi stated that
such myopic considerations are not good for our politics.
He stressed that every authority is ordained by God and added that God
would always use men to actualize His purpose. He, therefore, advised
Nigerians to align their choice of whoever becomes their leaders with
the will of God for the nation to experience peace and prosperity.
On the role of the press, Professor Ajayi said it is the responsibility
of the press to show the way by constantly reporting the truth, so that
the people would be properly guided. He said that a situation where the
press publishes fake news or allows itself to be bought with money would
spell doom for the country.
More so, the Chairman of the occasion, Publisher of the Guardian Newspapers Limited, Lady Maiden
Alex-Ibru, said that the press is constitutionally empowered to
monitor governance and hold the people in authority accountable. She
disclosed that in 1979, the country’s political leaders inserted the
idea of federal character in the constitution to lighten the darkness
called nepotism and sectionalism, but regrettably, they have been
insensitive to the principle of federal character in recent times. She
expressed hope that true federalism would be restored in Nigeria.
Earlier, the President and Board Chairman, The Bible Society of Nigeria,
Dr. Aaron Nuhu, welcomed guests to the occasion, while the General
Secretary, Dr. Dare Ajiboye encouraged them to vote in elections if they
must change the political landscape of the country. He urged them to
back up their prayers for a better Nigeria with actual voting, adding
that the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) will only count
votes and not prayers.
