When Faith Meets Compassion: How a Simple Gift Restored Hope in Oshodi

For many elderly men and women and schoolchildren in Shogunle, Oshodi, life has become increasingly difficult. Rising living costs have forced many families to make painful choices between feeding their households, educating their children, and meeting other basic needs. Yet, amid these challenges, a simple act of kindness reminded them that they were not alone.

What began as an ordinary church gathering soon became a day filled with joy, gratitude, and renewed hope as The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), through its Macedonia Call Initiative, reached out with Bibles, school bags, writing materials, and food items. For the over 200 beneficiaries, these were not just gifts – they were tangible expressions of God’s love and compassion.

Children beamed with excitement as they proudly held their colourful school bags and exercise books, imagining the new opportunities they would bring. For many elderly beneficiaries, the food items eased immediate burdens, while receiving God’s Word in English, Yoruba, and Igbo Languages reminded them that God has not forgotten them.

The outreach benefited members of The Gospel Faith Mission International, Methodist Church Nigeria, and The Praying Band of C&S Church, Ogo-Oluwa. Speaking during the event, BSN’s Programmes Manager, Mrs. Grace Benjamin, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to caring for both the spiritual and physical needs of vulnerable people.

She explained that the Macedonia Call Initiative was established to support the poor, the vulnerable, and the needy, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or social background. While the programme has traditionally focused on schools and underserved communities, this outreach marked an important milestone as it intentionally extended support to churches after recognising that many struggling families also worship faithfully despite their hardships.

The outreach was made possible through the generous support of the Canadian and Australian Bible Societies, whose partnership continues to bring hope to communities across Nigeria.

Beyond the distribution of relief materials, the day served as a powerful reminder that compassion is most meaningful when it meets people at their point of need. Sometimes, restoring hope begins with something as simple as a Bible, a meal, or a school bag. These small gifts carry a much greater message: You are seen. You are valued. You are loved.

As the beneficiaries returned home with smiles on their faces and hope in their hearts, the impact of the outreach became clear. Through every Bible shared, every child encouraged, and every family supported, lives were touched, dignity was restored, and the love of Christ was made visible.

Truly, when faith meets compassion, hope is reborn.
