THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORETRAVELING OVERSEAS
INTRODUCTION
The term “Japa”, which refers to the act of seeking better opportunities overseas, has gained popularity among Nigerians, especially among youths. The desire to “japa” often stems from the inability of many young people to cope with the enormous challenges confronting them in Nigeria, such as high unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of personal and professional growth prospects.
A Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey revealed that seven out of ten Nigerians are willing to relocate to other countries for various reasons. The current net Nigeria migration rate is 0.273 per 1,000 population, indicating that more people are emigrating from the country.
While Japa can be a positive move if guided by faith and instruction from God, it is crucial to consider the following factors before embarking on such a journey:
1. Seek God’s Guidance
Before deciding to relocate overseas, pray to God and seek His direction. Just as Abraham received divine guidance in Genesis 12, it is essential to ensure that your relocation plan aligns with God’s purpose for your life.
Do not be swayed solely by the success stories of others. Constantly ask yourself if this relocation is part of God’s plan for you at this time (Jeremiah 29:11). Trusting in the Lord and acknowledging Him in all your ways will lead you on the right path (Proverbs 3:5–6, Philippians 4:6–7).
2. Ensure Legality and Safety
Choose legal means of migration and avoid irregular routes, such as crossing through the Libyan desert and the Mediterranean Sea. These routes are notorious for various dangers, including kidnapping, forced labour, exploitation by criminal networks, and severe trauma.
The World Bank’s 2021 report revealed that many migrants have lost their lives in the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea while striving to reach Europe. Another major risk highlighted by the report, especially for migrants from poorer households, is taking loans to finance migration costs, only to fall into a heavy debt trap when they return empty-handed.
To avoid these challenges, ensure you have adequate funds to finance your travel and obtain proper travel documents approved by the immigration services of your destination country. Beware of fraudulent agents who may forge documents and put you in unnecessary trouble.
Following the counsel of Romans 13:1–2 and Proverbs 22:3 will help you avoid regrettable situations.
3. Thoroughly Research Your New Home
Before relocating, conduct extensive research on your intended destination. Gather information about:
- Local culture and customs
- Language
- Food
- Tax obligations
- Housing and living arrangements
- Healthcare services
- Transportation systems
- Weather and climate
- Currency and financial systems
- Health and safety concerns
This knowledge will help you prepare adequately for the transition. Utilize available resources, including the internet, to gather information about your prospective place of residence (Proverbs 18:15).
4. Assess Career Prospects
Evaluate the career opportunities and advancement prospects available in your destination country. Ensure that the profession you intend to pursue offers better prospects than your current situation in Nigeria.
Research extensively on how to enter your desired field and consider obtaining any necessary certifications before making the move.
Additionally, be cautious about selling off your belongings in Nigeria without proper knowledge of the opportunities awaiting you abroad. It is important not to find yourself in a situation where you regret leaving everything behind.
As advised in Luke 14:28–30 and Proverbs 21:5, careful planning should precede every major decision.
CONCLUSION
Relocating overseas, or “Japaing,” can be an exciting endeavor when approached with careful consideration and proper planning. Adhering to the principles outlined in this article can significantly increase your chances of a successful and fulfilling journey abroad.
Above all, remember to trust in God, seek His counsel, and ensure that your decisions align with His purpose for your life (Proverbs 3:5–6, Jeremiah 29:11).
