The Egmond 2023 Statement: A Catalyst for Bible Translation Success – A Reflection on the Ogbia Bible Project

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) stands as a beacon of light in advancing the cause of Bible translation, publication, distribution, and engagement across Nigeria’s diverse linguistic landscape. A significant factor that has propelled this mission forward is its affiliation with the United Bible Societies (UBS), a partnership that has fostered growth, sustainability, and strategic development within the BSN.  During the most recent UBS World Assembly, Egmond 2023, an Assembly Statement which outlined seven key priorities was developed. The priorities are Bible translation, printed Bible distribution, Bible engagement, serving diaspora communities, creation care, mission resilience, and digital transformation. The recent completion of the Ogbia Bible translation project exemplifies how this affiliation has positively influenced BSN’s efforts, reinforcing its commitment to making the Scriptures accessible to all Nigerians.

Understanding the United Bible Societies – Egmond 2023 Statements
UBS represents a collaborative network of Bible Societies and partners working together to strengthen Bible translation efforts worldwide. This affiliation provides essential resources — financial, technical, and capacity-building — enabling Bible Societies like the BSN to achieve remarkable milestones in their mission. The partnership embodies a shared vision: ensuring every community receives the Word of God in a language they understand best.

Impact on the Bible Society of Nigeria
The UBS Affiliation has significantly shaped BSN’s strategic direction, fostering a more robust and efficient operational model. Key areas of impact include Capacity Building and Training; Technical Support and Consultancy; Innovation and Technology Advancement, etc.

BSN’s Commitment: Driven by a Higher Calling
The UBS Affiliation has not only supported BSN’s operations but has also deepened the Society’s commitment to its mission. The successful completion of the Ogbia Bible translation TC Checking stands as a testament to this unwavering dedication. BSN’s resolve remains anchored in:
  • Promoting Unity and Collaboration: The Ogbia project demonstrated the power of teamwork, both within the BSN and through external affiliations. The BSN remains committed to fostering more partnerships to amplify its impact.
  • Ensuring Accuracy and Cultural Relevance: The meticulous multi-stage translation process — from individual drafting to community reviews and consultant checks — mirrors BSN’s dedication to delivering translations that resonate with the target communities.
  • Expanding Translation Reach: With only 27 translations completed out of over 500 Nigerian languages, the BSN is more determined than ever to scale up its efforts. The support and inspiration from UBS reinforce this drive.
  • Sustaining Translators’ Welfare: Acknowledging the financial struggles faced by translators, the BSN remains committed to improving their welfare through better support systems.
The Ogbia Bible: A Milestone and a Motivation
The completion of the Ogbia Bible translation is not just an achievement; it reflects what strategic partnerships can accomplish. It highlights BSN’s resilience, faith, and unrelenting pursuit of its vision — to ensure the Bible is accessible to everyone in a language they understand, love, and engage with.

As the BSN looks to the future, the Egmond Statement remains a crucial pillar in scaling up Bible translation efforts, expanding reach, and transforming lives across Nigeria’s diverse cultural landscape.
