Raising a Bible-Loving Generation: Transforming Lives Through Bible Competitions

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) remains committed to its mission of making the Holy Bible available and affordable to Nigerians in their preferred languages and formats, and of encouraging interaction with the Word of God through life-transforming programmes. Among such impactful initiatives are the Primary Schools Bible Competition (PSBC) and the National Bible Competition (NBC), strategically designed to engage children and youths with the Scriptures from an early stage and nurture them in godly values.

Primary Schools Bible Competition (PSBC)

The Primary Schools Bible Competition is a special project aimed at helping children in primary schools imbibe Biblical values through early interaction with God’s Word. This initiative was conceived with a focus on: inculcating godly values and virtues in children, thereby redefining the societal value system; stimulating biblical and intellectual engagement among participants; reviving the reading culture, particularly in relation to the study of the Bible; providing a unique platform for pupils to interact with the Scriptures in a fun, engaging, and educational manner and fostering a healthy spirit of competition and teamwork.

In March 2025, 43 primary schools across Nigeria registered for the PSBC. However, due to logistic and structural limitations, only 17 schools participated in the preliminary stage, as the competition is currently held within Lagos State. Plans are already in motion to expand the reach of the PSBC beyond Lagos State, to accommodate more schools and engage a wider range of children with the Word of God across Nigeria. Notwithstanding this limitation, the competition continues to grow in impact, with six top-performing schools advancing to the grand finale. Pupils studied My 100–Best Loved Bible Stories, which provided foundational Bible knowledge in a child-friendly format, enriching their understanding of the Christian faith.

National Bible Competition (NBC)

The National Bible Competition, on the other hand, targets the youth in churches and communities, providing them with a platform to deepen their knowledge of Scripture and build a strong moral and spiritual foundation. The objectives of the NBC align with those of the PSBC, with added emphasis on empowering youths to apply biblical principles to their daily lives and encouraging unity among churches and youths through shared spiritual engagement.

The Auxiliary stage of the 2025 NBC was held across many churches in 22 Areas of The Bible Society of Nigeria, demonstrating the Society’s wide-reaching influence and commitment to grassroots Bible engagement. The competition took place on April 12, 2025, with participants studying the Book of Daniel, a biblical text rich in lessons on faith, integrity, and godly leadership.

Conclusion

Through the PSBC and the NBC, The Bible Society of Nigeria is actively fulfilling its mission of making the Bible accessible and encouraging Scripture engagement in age-appropriate and impactful ways. These competitions not only promote Bible literacy but also help to nurture a generation of morally sound and spiritually rooted Nigerians.
