The 15th Founder’s Day Annual Lecture and Awards Ceremony of The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos, on February 8, 2024. The event, organised to commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of BSN, often presents a platform for sharing knowledge and insights on pertinent issues affecting Nigeria as a nation. This year’s discussion centered around the theme: “Security, Social Justice, and Poverty Eradication: Clarion Demands on Governance in Nigeria.” The theme was timely considering the spate of insecurity ravaging the country.

Esteemed dignitaries from both public and private sectors graced the occasion. Among them was the Patron of the BSN, General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, GCFR (Rtd), whose presence added a historical perspective to the discourse. Pastor Abiodun Iderawumi, Group Managing Director, Wetherheads Advertising Group – a seasoned professional with vast experience in corporate and social spheres, was the Chairman of the occasion. The Guest Speaker was Mr. Mike Awoyinfa, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Corporate Biographers. Mr. Awoyinfa delivered a thought-provoking keynote address, delving into the intricate connections between security, social justice, and poverty eradication. He emphasised the crucial role of governance in addressing these issues and called for collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and civil society.

The guest speaker specifically focused on the pervasive insecurity in Nigeria. Drawing insights from the story of David and Goliath in the Bible, Mr. Awoyinfa analysed current state of insecurity in Nigeria, acknowledging the fear that has gripped the nation. He portrayed this fear as a formidable adversary like the mighty Philistines against the Israelites and emphasised that, like David, facing overwhelming odds, Nigerians needed faith in God, courage, and resourcefulness to confront the insecurity plaguing the nation. The guest speaker asserted that just as God was the ultimate security for the Israelites, He remains Nigeria’s security. He admonished the audience to continually put their trust in God, echoing the resilience and unwavering faith David exhibited in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Mr. Awoyinfa passionately called on Nigerians to emulate David’s courage in confronting the contemporary challenges facing the country. He urged the nation to stand up against the threats of insecurity, accentuating the need for collective action and determination to overcome these challenges.

Also, General Gowon, while lending his voice to the topic of discourse, called for unity among all levels of government, irrespective of political affiliations, to address the pressing issues of security, social justice, and poverty. He lamented the diverse security challenges, including the activities of kidnappers and bandits, which pose threats to the peace and prosperity of the nation. Expressing concern over these issues, General Gowon called on those disturbing the peace of the nation to sheath their swords. He urged Nigerians to intensify prayers for the country’s peace, stability, prosperity, and progress.

The former Head of State also used the occasion to call for support for BSN’s drive to build a new Bible House, which would help the organisation function optimally and fulfil its mandate of making the Holy Bible available and affordable to Nigerians.
