It was an exciting, inspiring and educational day at The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) Head Office as students and teachers of Deeper Life High School, Lagos paid an educational visit to the organisation as part of their school excursion.

While many students look forward to excursions to amusement parks, recreational centres and other popular attractions, the students of Deeper Life High School, Lagos, made a remarkable choice. They chose to visit The Bible Society of Nigeria, an organisation whose work revolves around making the Word of God available to people in Nigeria and beyond.

The delegation comprised 54 participants – 45 students and nine members of staff, including the School Administrator, Principal, teaching staff and support staff. The students, aged between 11 and 16 years, were drawn from both the Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, with a larger number from the Junior Secondary School.

The visit provided the students with an opportunity to move beyond classroom learning and gain first-hand knowledge of how the Bible is translated, published, distributed and made available in different languages and formats.

From the moment they arrived, the students displayed great enthusiasm and curiosity. They were introduced to the history and mandate of The Bible Society of Nigeria and given an insight into the organisation’s operations and programmes. The interactive sessions exposed them to the various ways BSN contributes to Bible engagement, translation and distribution across Nigeria.

One of the highlights of the excursion was the students’ exposure to Bible translation and production processes. They learnt that making the Bible available in a language and format that people can understand involves painstaking research, translation, checking, editing, production and distribution. The students were particularly fascinated to learn about the work that goes into making the Scriptures accessible to different language communities.

The students and teachers also had the opportunity to learn about useful Bible study resources, including Bible commentaries, concordance, Hebrew and Greek word studies, and Bible dictionaries. These practical sessions were designed to strengthen their Bible study skills and encourage them to engage more deeply with the Scriptures.

The excursion was not merely a tour of the BSN premises; it became an opportunity for the young visitors to discover the story behind the Bible they read and appreciate the significant work involved in making God’s Word accessible to millions of people.

The visit also created an avenue for interaction between the students, teachers and BSN staff. Questions from the students demonstrated their genuine interest in the Bible, its history, translation and the work of BSN. Their enthusiasm made the visit engaging and memorable for both the visitors and their hosts.

As the students departed at the end of the visit, they left with more than memories of a day spent outside the classroom. They carried with them new knowledge about the Bible, its translation and production, as well as a deeper appreciation of the work of the Bible Society of Nigeria.
