After a decade-long journey marked by unwavering commitment, rigorous processes, and remarkable resilience, the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) proudly announces the successful completion of the Ogbia Bible translation and its translation consultant (TC) checking. Ogbia is a language spoken in Bayelsa State. This monumental achievement reflects not only the dedication of the translators but also the faithfulness of God in seeing the project through from inception to completion.

A Rigorous Journey: The Translation Process
The Ogbia Bible translation journey adhered to an internationally recognised, meticulous process to ensure accuracy, clarity, and cultural relevance. The stages included:
Individual Drafting; Team Checking; Community Review; and Consultant Check.

Overcoming Challenges: A Testament to Resilience
The journey was not without significant hurdles. Among the challenges faced were:

• Lack of translation methodology: Initial struggles were addressed through comprehensive training and expert guidance.
• Mastering translation software (Paratext): The team underwent specialised training to proficiently utilise this essential tool for Bible translation.
• Community acceptability: Continuous engagement and reviews with the Ogbia community ensured that the translation was embraced.
• Financial hardships: Many translators endured personal sacrifices, surviving on meager salaries.
• Biblical word equivalency: The team creatively developed culturally relevant expressions for biblical terms unfamiliar to the Ogbia context, such as “snow” and “camel.”
• Source language expertise: Continuous training and mentorship equipped translators with a deeper knowledge of Hebrew and Greek.

With determination and unwavering faith, these challenges were surmounted through:

• Capacity building: Intensive, ongoing training sessions empowered the translators.
• Support from UBS consultants: Their expertise and humility in guiding the team played a pivotal role.
• BSN’s steadfast commitment: The BSN provided continuous financial, logistical, and moral support.

A Call to Action: Supporting the Mission of Bible Translation
The completion of the Ogbia Bible is a momentous achievement, marking a significant milestone in a journey of faith and dedication.
