BSN Partners NAB to Celebrate International White Cane and Safety Day 2026
Promoting Independence Through Awareness
The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) partnered with The Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB), Lagos State Chapter, to join the global community in celebrating International White Cane and Safety Day on Thursday, 15 October 2026. The celebration was held on the theme, “The White Cane: Navigating Without Limits,” highlighting the resilience, independence and limitless potential of persons with visual impairment.
The annual event serves as a platform to raise awareness of the significance of the white cane as a symbol of mobility, safety, dignity and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.
A Walk for Inclusion and Accessibility
One of the major highlights of the celebration was a four-kilometre awareness walk aimed at drawing public attention to the rights, welfare and capabilities of people with visual impairment.
The walk commenced at King’s College Annex, Victoria Island, Lagos, and ended at Our Saviour’s Church Hall, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos. Along the route, participants engaged members of the public in discussions about the importance of creating an inclusive society where people with visual impairment can move around safely, confidently and independently.
The event also provided an opportunity to advocate for safer roads, accessible infrastructure, equal opportunities and greater social inclusion for people with disabilities.
BSN’s Visible Support and Commitment Through Service
As part of its support for the celebration, The Bible Society of Nigeria mobilised members of staff to serve as volunteers during the awareness walk. The volunteers assisted and guided participants throughout the procession, ensuring their safety and comfort.
Beyond providing volunteers, BSN also sponsored participants’ transport, banners, press coverage and media publicity, helping to amplify awareness of the challenges and aspirations of people with visual impairment. These efforts reflect BSN’s commitment to promoting inclusion and supporting initiatives that empower vulnerable groups within society.
Making God’s Word Accessible to All
BSN is committed to making the Bible available to every Nigerian in their preferred language and format, including accessible formats for people who are blind or visually impaired. This commitment is reflected in BSN’s annual partnership with the National Association of the Blind to commemorate International White Cane Day. The partnership underscores BSN’s passion for making God’s Word accessible to persons with visual impairment through Braille and other accessible Bible formats.
Beyond the Annual Celebration
BSN’s commitment to people with visual impairment extends far beyond the annual White Cane Day celebration. Through the generous support and donations of well-meaning Nigerians, the Society provides Braille Bibles free of charge to blind and visually impaired individuals across the country, enabling them to engage personally with God’s Word.
The Society also promotes spiritual growth and biblical literacy among students with visual impairment through its annual ‘You Can Be Their Eyes’ Bible Quiz. This unique initiative gives students in schools for the blind the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the Scriptures, while developing confidence, knowledge and a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
These interventions demonstrate BSN’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that no one is excluded from accessing the life-transforming message of the Bible because of a disability.
A Call for Greater Partnership
As the demand for accessible Scriptures and inclusive programmes continues to grow, BSN welcomes partnerships and support from individuals, churches, organisations and corporate bodies who share its vision of empowering people with visual impairment.
