Olorundare, Femi Receive Braille Bible, Commend BSN

Two people with visual disabilities, Mrs. Adenike Olorundare and Authentic Femi, have commended The Bible Society of Nigeria for giving them a complete set of the Braille Bible each.

They gave the commendations while receiving the sets of the Braille Bible delivered to their respective homes by BSN officials. Both said they had needed the Bible but had no means to acquire it.

Mrs. Adenike, a mother, works as a Braille Instructor and serves as a member of the Board of Lectors (a group of individuals responsible for reading the Bible during Mass and other liturgical celebrations) in her church. Before now, she said she would manually transcribe and braille any portion of the Scripture assigned to her to read during each Sunday service. This exercise, she said, is tedious and time-consuming, but with the Braille Bible there will no longer be a need for that.

Furthermore, she said the Bible will enhance her knowledge of the word of God, help improve her spelling, as she can now pause, go back and forth, and cross-check anything while reading. This, she said, is not possible when listening to an audio Bible. “I was quite excited when I learnt I was going to get Braille Bible from The Bible Society of Nigeria, and here I am with the Bible. I really appreciate it. I had to take a day off from work to receive this Bible because of its value to me. I am so grateful now that it is mine. The organisation will continue to grow from strength to strength in Jesus’ name,” she said in appreciation of the Bible she received from the BSN.

Mrs. Olorundare said she was determined not to be a liability, which was why she went to school. She advised parents who have children with visual challenges not to lock them up at home but take them to special schools to get an education.

Mrs. Olorundare and Femi said they both lost their sight at a tender age after suffering from measles. Mr. Femi, a student of History at Obafemi Awolowo University, said he had become rusty at reading braille. According to him, the Braille Bible will help him improve his knowledge of the Bible and his proficiency in reading braille materials. “I can now read the Bible at any time. This was not possible when listening to an audio on the phone, because if the phone is not charged or available, I cannot listen to it.,” he added, and prayed for The Bible Society of Nigeria and the donors that gave him the Bible.
